The multiplication of new products in the multimedia business, HDTV, IPTV, Internet, etc., is generating a fast increase in the demand for data transfer and download capabilities on the part on the consumers. The demand now is in the order of 30 to 50 MBps. It is predicted that it will double every 18 months for several years to come, which will require on a short term basis high capacity networks for each residence. The solution to this problem will be diversified and will be a mixture of wired and wireless technologies. For the residential as well as the commercial buildings, the solution of choice for a very large data transfer capability is the Optical Fiber (FTTH for Fiber-to-the-home and FTTP for Fiber-to-the-Premises).

We find several major equipment suppliers in North-America for optical fiber networking. MCM as worked with some of the most important ones to validate the installation of their equipment the entire line of MCM Cabinets. You will therefore find a specific code for fiber connections in our Selection Table. We also hereafter present a typical diagram for the Deployment of the Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) for a project of 96 homes.

This type of project can be realized for a new housing development as well as for an existing residential area. In this case, one possibility is to use the Retrofit CabinetTM which can be installed around existing lamp posts, as well as a microducts technology as developed by the firm MiniFlex® to bring the fiber to every building using mini trenches. This technology allows connecting up to 24 homes in only one half of an MCM Cabinet.

Further, the above diagram includes a Cellular Antenna installation, aesthetically integrated into a decorative lamp post. This is an element of what is called a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) which allows to deploy simultaneously the FTTH and a 3G+ or 4G type cellular network required by the new intelligent portable phones. The following photo shows this type of installation where the components driving the cellular antenna are concealed in the MCM Base type X4S in the lower part of the lamp post. We also see the antenna à the top of the post. For more info on these possibilities, please contact us.
